Position Summary

The Geoscience Manager for the Digital Mapping Laboratory of the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is stationed at the Moscow campus of the University of Idaho. The incumbent will manage and maintain production, publication, and delivery of geologic and other IGS maps, products, and data. The Geoscience Manager will supervise the Digital Mapping Laboratory staff, which includes GIS Analysts and Digital Cartographers. Incumbent also oversees Information Technology contractors. Maintenance and purchasing of lab software and hardware and co-management of the IGS website and Windows network domain are additional responsibilities of the position. A strong understanding and demonstrated work experience in geologic mapping are important skills for the incumbent to successfully interface with geologic staff on IGS research projects. Light travel will be required as needed to attend professional or state meetings and to visit the Boise office of IGS.


Job Duty Function Manage the Digital Mapping and GIS Laboratory
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The incumbent will provide general and direct supervision and training of Geologists, GIS Analysts, Digital Cartographers, and others working on IGS projects within the Digital Mapping Laboratory. The successful candidate will supervise and conduct highly technical GIS and geospatial tasks; assign technical tasks to support staff; set project priorities; supervise all map production tasks; oversee IGS publication tasks and web delivery; and supervise the development of lab procedures, computer scripts, and software code as needed to maintain compliance with industry protocols. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining and updating GIS software; developing and maintaining lab budgets for equipment and service contracts; identifying and obtaining equipment and software necessary to maintain lab functions; and providing recommendations to the Director for long-term planning and best management practices to ensure smooth operation of the Lab. A strong understanding of geological mapping skills is considered necessary for ongoing interaction with geological staff on IGS research projects.

Job Duty Function Overseeing the Idaho Geological Survey website
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The incumbent will be expected to maintain and oversee management of the Survey website; manage the posting of online publications; manage and design online databases with contractors; develop new web tools and applications in cooperation with staff and/or contractors to meet the needs of the Survey, its customers, or fulfill grant requirements; coordinate with IGS Geologists on research projects that have website requirements; and determine website statistics as needed.

Job Duty Function Manage Information Technology for the survey
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The incumbent will provide coordination and communication with Information Technology contractors to maintain website, file servers, and the IGS domain. The Geoscience Manager will also be responsible for purchasing computers, servers, peripherals, and software as needed; coordinating with the Director to develop and implement computer maintenance and replacement strategies; addressing staff computer and software maintenance/problem issues; maintaining Active Directory for Windows Server and the IGS Windows network domain; and addressing University of Idaho Information Technology policies and procedures as they apply to IGS.

Job Duty Function Assist with survey publications and publication sales
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The incumbent will coordinate with IGS staff to assign publication identifier numbers; coordinate and oversee the editing and revising of publication documents; training, supporting, and supervising when necessary the publications sales staff; monitor publication databases including Point of Sale software and database; and deliver Survey publications to the Idaho State Commission for Libraries and other agencies per requirements.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Geology or closely related field.
• Proven experience with ESRI ArcGIS software applications.
• Three years of post-degree applied ArcGIS work experience with geologic and geospatial data (teaching experience at any level or graduate TA or RA assistantships or Post Doctorate Internships are not counted as applied work experience).
• Proficient understanding of geologic maps and geologic mapping principals.
• Proficiency in general office computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
• Working knowledge in database design.
• Working knowledge of programming language for GIS applications.
• Working knowledge of PC computers including servers.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass University of Idaho Defensive Driving course.

Preferred Qualifications

• Map publication experience including publishing maps and other publications using ArcMap and Adobe Illustrator.
• Proven record of successful management of technical staff including direct supervision of geology, GIS, and digital cartographic employees.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and be part of a larger team working environment.
• Proven knowledge and work experience with management of IT contractors.
• Working knowledge of SQL database scripting language.
• Working knowledge of computer IT systems including MS Active Directory and managing local domains.
• Proven and advanced knowledge/work experience with Python programing.
• Demonstrated experience with teaching GIS and database skills to technical staff.
• Applied GIS/geology work experience with a state or federal geologic survey.
• Proven experience with conducting geologic mapping.
• Proven working experience with Lidar applications in the field of geology.
• Ph.D. in Geology or closely related field with an emphasis in geospatial and GIS applications of geology.
• Registration as an Idaho Licensed Professional Geologist (PG) or ability to complete licensure within 18 months of employment at IGS. Licensure enhances eligibility for merit-based pay increases.
GIS Certificate or equivalent.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD software.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Ability to carry and/or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Finalists for this position are required to travel to Moscow at IGS expense for an interview and provide a 30-minute oral presentation on their applied work or research on geological projects using GIS and other applications.
