Position Summary

The lab technician will assist in running the newly established Biogeochemistry Core Facility at the University of Idaho. The Core Facility is a collaborative unit involving departments across the University that houses instrumentation and laboratory space related to the biogeochemistry of managed and natural ecosystems. The position offers opportunities to be involved in research projects across the Department of Soil and Water Systems.

Responsibilities

Job Duty Function Manage laboratory processes and experiments
Job Duties/Responsibilities

Safe and efficient operation of the instrumentation, including preparing samples, training Core users and students, establishing method protocols, maintaining the Core database, and ensuring laboratory safety compliance with the University standards.

Job Duty Function Assisting with Research
Job Duties/Responsibilities

Providing research assistance in the field, presenting during lectures. The technician will collect soil, water, and plant samples from various field locations. The technician will
present laboratory methods, safety protocols, and scientific results during class lectures.

Job Duty Function Writing for publications and the core website
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The technician will help in maintaining the core website by providing laboratory updates. The technician will contribute to scientific publications by providing written methods or other content.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

-B.S./B.A. in soil, microbiology, or water sciences or comparable fields.
-Experience with stable isotope analysis
-Experience working in microbial ecology
-Experience working in hydrology

Preferred Qualifications

-Previous laboratory and management experience
-Demonstrated ability to communicate science
-Knowledge of cavity ring down spectroscopy instruments
-Knowledge of DNA extraction, PCR, and qPCR
-Knowledge of flow injection analysis (FIA)
