Position Summary

The Department of English invites applications for the position of Chair. This is a permanent, full-time, tenured position. The responsibilities of the chair are twofold. A primary responsibility is to promote the interest and welfare of the department in teaching, research, service, and outreach. A parallel responsibility is to work with the college office and other unit administrators in stewardship of the college. Along with supervisory and fiscal responsibility and routine administration of the department, the chair’s responsibilities will include assisting higher administration in assigning and evaluating the services of each staff and faculty member, and providing for faculty participation in matters of academic policy and personnel. The chair will preside at English faculty meetings, appoint committees as specified in the department’s by-laws, and inform the faculty of developments within the department, the college, and the university. The department chair position carries a 1-1 teaching load and a 15 % administrative salary increment for the academic-year appointment; any additional summer duties are arranged with the Dean of the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences through a separate contract.

(1) in coordination with the directors, oversight of English graduate degree programs, including the orientation of graduate students in the fall; (2) in coordination with the administrative assistants and the Scholarships Committee, supervision and administration of all departmental scholarships; (3) in coordination with the administrative assistants, summer advising; (4) in coordination with the MFA director, MA-English director, MA-TESL director, Director of Writing, and administrative assistants, the review and appointment of teaching assistants.

Other tasks associated with the chair:

-Coordinate the 4-year English major with UI-Coeur d’Alene.

-Submit nominations for university awards.

-Oversee hiring, training, and evaluation of departmental staff.

-Maintain the smooth working of the department’s alliance with The Ernest Hemingway Foundation.

-Advance development and cultivate potential donors; write thank-you notes for gifts to the department.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Tenured Associate or Full Professor, current faculty in the Department of English at the University of Idaho.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in scholarship.

Demonstrated excellence in service.
