Position Summary

The University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Media in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. This is a permanent, full-time, tenured position at the Associate Professor or Professor level, depending on qualifications. Associate Professor level page range is from $66,000 to $68,000 plus a 15% Administrative increment. Professor level pay range is from $74,500 to $76,500 plus a 15% Administrative increment.

The School seeks a dynamic and innovative director who values and promotes outstanding instruction, scholarship and creative activity, professional outreach, and interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with other units of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. This is an opportunity for a strategic leader to lead the Northwest’s newest accredited program in journalism and mass communication. The director will lead a successful program in journalism and media education, while exploring new fields of study, including a possible master’s degree in emerging media.

Responsibilities

Job Duty Function Departmental Leadership
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The director provides collegial, collaborative, and responsive leadership to the School and promotes the interests of the School in teaching, research and creative activity, and professional outreach. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Providing the strategic direction and vision for the delivery of quality, responsive curriculum and programs and supporting curriculum development and revision, including the possible development of a master’s degree in emerging media;
• Maintaining an effective and supporting relationship with the college’s dean and central administration;
• Preparing the School for an External Program Review (2018) and reaccreditation by the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (2019-2020).
• Recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty, while supporting their professional development;
• Ensuring third-year reviews, tenure, promotion, and other issues are appropriately and timely conducted;
• Developing position descriptions and performing annual evaluations for faculty and staff;
• Supervising the administrative support staff and other temporary help;
• Managing departmental financial and other resources;
• Creating and fostering positive and collaborative relationships with other units at the UI;
• Ensuring that communication with faculty, staff, students, alumni and media professionals is timely and relevant;
• Overseeing the development of course schedules and faculty assignments;
• Promoting partnerships and developing internship opportunities with media outlets and other organizations in Idaho and the Northwest;
• Advancing the status of the School in terms of funded research and professional development for media staff members and journalists in the region.
• Coordinating activities to enhance student recruitment, retention and advising;
• Overseeing development and delivery of quality online courses.

Job Duty Function Teaching and Advising
Job Duties/Responsibilities

The director will teach one or more journalism or mass media courses in the school (any level); the specific course load will be negotiated annually with the dean. The director will advise a proportionate share of major and minor students in JAMM.

The director will pursue and cultivate an innovative, funded, and nationally recognized program of scholarship, creative activity or professional outreach.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Terminal degree in journalism, mass communication or related field; J.D. acceptable.
• Experience: Academic experience and scholarly record that would qualify at the rank of associate professor or professor or significant professional experience (at least 10 years) in a media management or leadership position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research interests in journalism, mass communication, media studies or a closely related field.
• Professional experience as a journalist or media professional (at least two years).
• Leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a diverse academic unit and prepare it for reaccreditation.
• Previous administrative experience in an academic setting as a director, chair, associate dean or other position.
• Ability to work effectively in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
• Experience with strategic planning and program growth development.
• Commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students.
• Experience with budget development and management.
• Success in obtaining external funding.
• Understanding of the mission and goals of a land grant university.
• Active involvement with professional organizations
• Experience with outreach activities.
